This program, also known as the Java Virtual Machine is an update of the widely spread runtime environment that allows people to execute a wide range of applications developed by third parties and written with the java scripting language.
Using plugins, it allows the most popular web browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera) to run applications developed for a variety of purposes that include Online games, Chat applications, Image visualization, etc, through the java virtual machine.
It is also used to run other third parties programs, that are continuously released.

It is compatible with different Operating Systems (Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, Apple OSX) and technologies and can be installed online, or offline.
Additionally, it offers a decent amount of documentation resources, that will help you with issues during the download, installation, and configuration process.
